Albany locals turn out in force for the Chevron City to Surf for Activ
Crossing the finish line for the sixth year, Albany’s 2018 Chevron City to Surf for Activ has been run and won, with Eclipse Fitness Triathlete of the Year, Kurt Wesley (21) taking out first place in a time of 40 minutes, 30 seconds over 12km.
An inclusive event, more than 422 participants took to Middleton Beach for the annual fun run on Sunday, which incorporated a 12km walk/run and 4km walk/run/roll – a 30% increase in registrations on the previous year.
Toni Heinemann took first place for women in a time of 47 minutes and 47 seconds, followed soon after by youngster Jana Kriek (13) who finished in third place amongst all women (50.47), leaving the boys in that category trailing behind.
In the men’s category, local Albany man Jack Dunn completed the 12km run in second place overall. He finished in a time of 41 minutes.
The 4km run received high engagement, including Commonwealth Games gold medallist, ambassador and basketball legend Damian Martin and 2018 Activ Allstar Mia Rodriguez (4). Luke Burrows took out first place with a finishing time of 12 minutes, 38 seconds, while Christine Murray continued her reign taking first place (15.55) in the women’s race, where she has won five out of the six fun runs.
Murray commented, “City to Surf is an annual favourite. There is always a good turnout, especially considering the size of Albany. It is good to see so many people getting into the event for both fun and fitness.
There has been such a positive atmosphere to the event every year since I can remember, whether it be rain, hail or shine. I look forward to future Chevron City to Surf for Activ events in Albany, maybe next year I’ll even tackle the 12km, something I’ve been wanting to do for a while.”
