Tips from 2018’s Top Fun-Raising Teams

Did you know that when you participate in the Chevron City to Surf for Activ you can raise money at the same time for your favourite charity through the Everyday Hero Platform?

It’s easy to do, just create a fundraising page when you sign up to enter. Already entered? Simply go to fundraisingcitytosurf.com.au and follow the prompts to create your page for free!

Somebody who did just that in 2018 was Sylvia and her partner Karan. Together they raised over $3500 for Animal Aid Abroad Inc and helped their team become the top fundraising team by raising over $10k!!

Sylvia is once again entering the Chevron City to Surf for Activ so we reached out to find out more about her amazing story and fundraising efforts!

What distance are you participating in this year?

I will be participating in the 12km this year!

Are you running, walking or rolling?

I am happy to say I will be walking the 12km this year.  Last year I sprained my right foot in 4 places (at the eleventh hour) so my partner, Karan, pushed me in my mum’s wheelchair the entire way. She wouldn’t let anyone help her because we walked for the animals that carry heavy loads and suffer greatly from the trauma of it.

How many times have you participated in the Chevron City to Surf for Activ?

This will be my 3rd time.

Can you tell us about your connection with Animal Aid Abroad and why you decided to fundraise for them in 2018 and again in 2019?

In 2015 we became lifetime members with Animal Aid Abroad and last year we decided to get much more involved with the fund-raising side of things. This charity is truly amazing. It has drastically changed the lives of many abandoned, abused, sick, and working animals. It has also been responsible for changing the way many people think about animals. Our increased involvement has allowed us to see first hand how hard the people in Animal Aid Abroad work; the passion shown by this group of wonderful people has inspired us to ‘roll up our sleeves’ and help as much as we can.

In 2018, you and Karan had one of the highest fundraising pages from all of the participants. Can you share your secret?

Our secret is simple: we believed in what we were doing, and I think that really resonated with the people we asked to help us raise money. We were happy with the response, but honestly not surprised. Once we explained why we were fun-raising and showed the donators where the money would go, the money was given in abundance.

Can you give any advice for anyone that is contemplating entering the race this year?

Start fund-raising as early as you can and approach anybody and everybody because people will surprise you.

Any other additional information you would like to share about your experience last year?

City to Surf was worth every aching muscle. It is a great platform through which charities like ours can become more visible to the public. It was great seeing many other groups doing exactly that. It really does restore your faith in people.
