Eureka and her dad have been at the large roundabout at Lovekin Drive and May Drive in Kings Park cheering you on for the last seven years. We’re pleased to say that they’ll be back again in 2019.
Make sure you give them a wave, a smile, a high-five or a simple thank you if you see them out on course. After all, it’s volunteers like Eureka who make the Chevron City to Surf for Activ possible.
When did you first start volunteering for Chevron City to Surf for Activ?
I started in 2012 with my sister who wanted me to buddy with her. My dad joined me in 2014 and we have continued ever since. This year will be my 8th year. Two more years and I’ll qualify for long service leave!
Can you tell us about your volunteering role as Corner Marshals?
It’s easy and fun. A wave and a smile is all you need. I’ve been a Corner Marshal at the large roundabout at Lovekin Drive and May Drive in Kings Park for the last seven years. I get a brilliant view of Elizabeth Quay and the city with lots of spectators joining me throughout the event cheering on their family and friends. It’s a great day out!
What motivates you to keep volunteering year after year?
I love volunteering. I volunteer throughout the year with various organisations (St John Ambulance, Event Health Services, Salvation Army Emergency Services, Red Cross, Constable Care Child Safety Foundation, and Heart Foundation to name a few) and at events such as the Rottnest Channel Swim and Step Up to MS.
My motivation? Seeing all the wonderful runners pounding the pavement to raise funds for Activ Foundation is enough for me to get up at 5am to cheer them on. And that’s saying something, I don’t even get up this early for work!
Do you have a message for other groups thinking of signing up to volunteer?
WE NEED YOU! This event is not possible without the generous support of volunteers. So, grab your family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, whoever you can and be a part of the best and longest running event in Perth!
Will you volunteer this year?
Signing up to volunteer is super simple and rewarding in ways you couldn’t imagine! Our volunteers join us for different reasons, but it’s no coincidence that many of them keep coming back year after year – just ask Eureka and the Clontarf Boys.
Whether you want to be a Course Marshal, help the athletes as they finish the event at the Perth Oval, or hand out race packets before the event, there’s a rewarding volunteer role for you. Bring a friend – or an entire team of people – and volunteer together! You’ll love it.
