Meet Jayme

Despite running nearly the equivalent of our 12k course during a WAFLW game, Chevron City to Surf ambassador Jayme Harken is adding in extra off-field training in preparation for this year’s event.

Jayme says game dynamics are a different kind of fitness, running 8-10kms includes lots of rest stops, unlike the Chevron City to Surf for Activ course where endurance is key.

The Claremont player will instead take to the popular running paths at Lake Monger and Herdsman Lake with her one-year-old Kelpie cross puppy Tilly to train for the event.

Jayme is proud to be an ambassador this year, a role she says combines her two passions, physical fitness and ensuring everyone has the same opportunities in life.

“In my life I’ve had so many role models, so the opportunity to be a role model and advocate for people living with disability is great! I hope I can inspire more people to get out and give the City to Surf a crack, no matter their ability, and help contribute more valuable funds towards the work Activ does in the community,” Jayme says.

Jayme is a self-confessed sports fanatic who grew up playing every sport she could try her hand at on her parents Wheatbelt farm and in Perth as a teenager. From netball to BMX, to horse riding, basketball and of course footy, today Jayme still spends her spare time enjoying different outdoor activities and fitness challenges on top of her WAFLW footy career.

Jayme is signed up for the 12k course and plans to run with friends and family from Claremont on the day.

“Heaps of the footy girls are getting involved! I’m going to run it for fun after training pretty hard last off-season for the Ironman, so I’m just going to enjoy the event this year… but I am competitive so that might change!”

She encourages people to sign up and set some goals for the event.

“Make sure to plan your training so you don’t over do it and get sick or injured before the event. As for fundraising, use your networks – share on socials, start a conversation or get out to your communities and spread the word, every dollar counts!”

“Set yourself a goal for fundraising and taking part in the event, and you’ll feel so accomplished when you reach that! There’s nothing more rewarding that helping others while helping yourself!”
