Running the Chevron City to Surf for Activ is a goal that will help improve your self-esteem, fitness and motivation. This is true for all of our participants, but even more so for the group of 11 newly-diagnosed Parkinson’s patients who are planning on taking part in this year’s event. Their training forms a significant part of their rehabilitation activities at St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals (SJGMPPH).
Running as a Refuge for Parkinson’s Disease Patients
Parkinson’s Disease is a complex disorder involving both motor and non-motor symptoms.
“Specific exercise can slow the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease by challenging the brain as well as the body,” SJGMPPH Senior Occupational Therapist Ellen Feeney said. For patients participating in the Chevron City to Surf for Activ 2019, their training is an extension of a specialised exercise program, known as PD Warrior.
SJGMPPH’s multi-disciplinary Parkinson’s Disease clinic includes exercise programs like PD Warrior to provide a holistic approach to the management of Parkinson’s Disease for patients. In addition to improving cardiovascular fitness of Parkinson’s Disease patients and reducing the risk of falls, PD Warrior aims to prolong independence and improve quality of life.
An Incredible Goal
For the 11 inspiring Parkinson’s Disease patients who will be participating in this year’s event, training for the 4km and 12km events is an incredible feat. According to Ellen Feeny, people affected by Parkinson’s experience slowed movement, stiff muscles and may become easily tired when walking.
“When we started running the PD Warrior program at the hospital, we thought it would be helpful to develop a goal for the participants like competing in both the 4km and 12km distance categories of the City to Surf,” Ellen said. “For all of these patients, participating in the City to Surf will be an incredible achievement.”
At the Chevron City to Surf for Activ headquarters, we are proud that these 11 incredible individuals have chosen the Chevron City to Surf for Activ platform to improve their health, fitness and self-esteem. If you’d like to see what training for your chosen distance can do for you, register now.
